FastWoRX-M Magnetic Sorbent Powder – Chemistry Done Faster, Greener and More Cost Effective
Faster, Greener and More Cost Effective!
Faster Chemistry’s FastWoRX-M is a hydrophobic and magnetic black powder that absorbs most organics. It can easily and quickly be separated – along with the absorbed organics – from the aqueous phase by a magnet or a simple filtration. Using an electromagnet allows easy collection and release of the powder, enabling many automation possibilities.
Get your chemistry done faster, greener and more cost-effectively
We offer a significantly better alternative to traditional liquid-liquid extraction used during reaction work-ups. Our FastWoRX products will reduce solvent use by 90% or more and work-up time by 50% or more.
FastWoRX-based reaction work-ups have many benefits over LLE-based work-ups including:
Solvent Savings- For a typical reaction conducted at 100 mg scale, 20 to 50 mL of solvent is typically needed for traditional LLE-based work-up. FastWoRX-based reaction work-up can be done with only 0−5 mL of solvent.
Time Savings- Traditional LLE-based reaction workup requires many steps such as LLE (10+ min per extraction, longer if there is emulsion formation), drying of the organic layers (20+ min), removing excess solvents with a rotavap (10 min) and loading the residue to a loading
cartridge (10 min). Typically, the total time will be more than 50 min. FastWoRX-based work-ups only requires solvent removal and filtration steps- the total time will typically be 15 min or less.
Safety- Reduction in potential contact with hazardous reagents and solvents.

FAQ
What makes Faster Chemistry products so unique? With broad absorbency and ease-of-use, they are the ideal solution to your reaction work-up and clean-up challenges and liquid-liquid extraction problems. They replace shaking and separating liquids in a sep funnel and emulsion formation with a simple and automatable filtration or solid separation step, allowing greater efficiency and more discovery hits while reducing solvent usage by 90% or more.
Is FastWoRX the same as Solid Phase Extraction (SPE)? No. SPE is based on adsorption – the surface of the support is treated with a compound to give the surface an affinity for a certain class of target compounds present in the aqueous phase. Using only the surface limits the SPE resin’s capacity to hold organics. In contrast, FastWoRX is based on the broad absorption of organics – the powder absorbs most organics into the bulk volume of its relatively thick polymer coating, removing the capacity limit imposed by surface area. The non-specific affinity of the hydrophobic polymer coating for organic compounds allows compounds to be absorbed into the polymer while excluding water. This gives FastWoRX two big advantages over SPE – near universal applicability in SPE-type applications using only a single sorbent and capacity that is not limited by surface area. Therefore, FastWoRX can practically separate mixtures at scales ranging from milligrams to kilograms and beyond.
What solvents are compatible with FastWoRX products? FastWoRX has been tested with many common solvents: EtOH, MeOH, dichloromethane, dichloroethane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, THF, dioxane, acetone, hexane, benzene, toluene, acetic acid, DMF and DMSO. Some swelling may occur but this is normal and reversible.
What is the shelf life of your products? The shelf life of FastWoRX products under reasonable storage conditions should be essentially indefinite.

Greener & More Fun
Making Organic Chemistry Laboratories Greener – and More Fun – with FastWoRX
Performing organic syntheses and reaction work-ups are essential experiences in the organic chemistry curriculum. However, traditional liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) in the undergraduate lab takes a significant amount of time, as well as cost due to use and disposal of solvent and purchase and replacement costs of separatory funnels or microscale glassware.
Carthage College student Michael Regotti and Associate Professor of Chemistry David Brownholland wanted to see if there was a better way after learning about Faster Chemistry’s FastWoRX products. They presented their progress on the development of a new undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory experiment utilizing FastWoRX-M at the American Chemical Society’s National Meeting in Orlando, Florida on April 1st, 2019.
In this experiment, students conducted a traditional reduction reaction of 9-fluorenone to 9-fluorenol using sodium borohydride, monitored by TLC.
After the reaction completed, students either extracted the product using traditional liquid-liquid extraction or FastWoRX-M. Students in both groups successfully recovered enough product for characterization and both procedures took a similar amount of time. Professor Brownholland found this latter point particularly impressive considering that this was the first time the students had used FastWoRX-M after having repeatedly done liquid-liquid extractions.
Learning objectives were equivalent between the two groups, but the students using FastWoRX-M reported having a much more enjoyable and interesting experience.
